Shooting Range SWOT Analysis

Strengths

People love to target shoot in any economic climate. Although a day at the range can be expensive, many people enjoy the sport and continue to participate in target shooting and firearms training. The incomes generated by shooting ranges can be substantial in most parts of the country. Shooting ranges tend to do best in suburban areas where discharging a firearm is not permitted on a person's own property. Generally, the barriers to entry for a shooting range are high (either outdoor or indoor). Startup costs range from $100,000 to $1 million depending on the location, size of the facility, required licensure, and number of lanes available to shooters. In some states, sales of ammunition is permitted which can be a substantial source of secondary income. As such, once established - shooting ranges typically do very well.

Weaknesses

Shooting ranges generally have very few weaknesses outside of standard operating risks. As people are required to sign a waiver before using facilities, the insurance costs associated with this type of business is moderate. The operating costs associated with a shooting range are also considered moderate. The primary weakness stems from competitive issues. However, in suburban markets competition is usually limited.

Opportunities

The biggest opportunity for a shooting range is to provide firearms training courses in conjunction with providing lanes to practice. These classes generate highly predictable streams of high margin revenue for these types of businesses. Where permitted, shooting ranges can obtain licensure to sell ammo to customers so that they do not have to leave the range. This can quickly become the primary revenue source for a shooting range.  Shooting ranges (especially large outdoor facilities) can expand their operations by adding in more lanes to accommodate a greater number of shooters. An entrepreneur that specializes in these types of businesses can also acquire existing ranges that are in profitable operations. Some companies also develop membership programs, which can generate a highly recurring stream of revenue for the business. These membership programs can provide benefits for people that are in law enforcement or the military.

Threats

At this time, there are no known threats or pieces of legislation that would impact the way that a shooting range conducts business. While firearms laws do change from time to time, they usually have little impact on these types of businesses.
