Beauty School SWOT Analysis

Strengths

People will always require a haircut, and with few exceptions - most people cannot do it on their own. That is why there is a continuing demand among people to become hair stylists and estheticians. Within most major metropolitan areas there are beauty schools that can teach people how to become a licensed stylists and esthetician. The demand for this type of professional training service does not wane during times of economic recession. In fact, during difficult economic climates - there is usually an increase in demand among people that want to learn new professions. This trend is expected to continue in perpetuity. The revenues generated by beauty schools is substantial, and the gross margins are high. Additionally, some states as well as the federal government has programs in place to assist students with the underlying tuition costs.

Weaknesses

There are not too many weaknesses associated with the operation of beauty school. Competition in most major cities is usually reasonable, and most rurally based beauty schools have almost no competition. The primary weakness faced by these businesses is that that they have relatively high operating costs, and they must have the appropriate licensure in place in order to render their services to students.

Opportunities

For most beauty schools, they way that revenues are increased is by expanding the initial facility while concurrently developing hair cutting and styling service operations. The benefit for the general public is that they can receive a discounted hair cut by allowing it to be completed by a student. Usually a small fee of $5 to $20 is charged to the customer. For most beauty schools, their student-teaching operations are a major revenue center. Additionally, once a beauty school establishes a strong brand name - they can readily expand into regional locations.

Threats

At this time, there are currently no known threats to how a beauty school operates. In the future, there may be cuts to tuition assistance programs offered by states and federal government entities. However, most tuition is paid directly by students to their respective beauty schools.
